The 2010 Welcoming Committee

Is there a Russian Tour in Ross’s future?
Prior to the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Olympics there was a large protest by a coalition of groups opposed to various aspects of the Olympic movement.

As usual the Carnival Band came out in force to put a smile on faces and to help keep the tone of the rally light and happy.
Eventually the Carnival Band went it’s own way and the protesters went theirs.

Torch Relay Protest

This morning groups opposed to the Olympics planned to disrupt the segment of the torch relay scheduled to pass along the Drive.

The Carnival Band turned out to help keep things light and cheery.

The torch was diverted along an alternate route, lots of folks danced and enjoyed the band.

We went home.

The End

Somewhere Else Is Here

The band’s usual Monday night rehearsal was relocated to the DTES for one night only on Feb. 8.

The Carnival Band has a small, but we feel pivotal, role in the film Somewhere Else Is Here by Austrian film maker, Marina Lebhuber

Alexis
After watching the screening, which was attended by many of the folks who related their stories in the film, the band played a few songs for the group and ate most of the food.

Kat and Shannon
Since there was still rehearsal time left the band processed to Woodward’s and subsequently ended up playing at the Cambie Pub to a highly appreciative audience.

Poverty Olympics 2010

The Carnival Band came out in force to support the 3rd Annual Poverty Olympics on the Downtown Eastside, Sunday, February 7

The Poverty Olympics were devised as a way to draw media and political attention to the unacceptable living conditions for many grindingly poor residents in Canada’s poorest postal code. Judging from the amount of photography, video and audio equipment tracking every inch of the parade it appears the the organizers achieved their objective.

While sending a strong message with serious implications the event was, in fact, a lot of fun.

The games are upon Us

Carnival Band Fans,

Love it or hate it, with the Vancouver squarely in the sights of the Olympic Cannon, this city is about to get a whole lot crazier. The Carnies, naturally, are following suit.

This Sunday, February 7th, join The Carnival Band and the Downtown Eastside Samba Band for the Poverty Olympics at the Carnegie Centre (Hastings and Main). The Poverty Olympics aim is to highlight the differences between the haves and the have-nots in our fair city. The event starts at 12:00pm. For more info, see here.

Then on Friday, February 12th, we will a part of the 2010 Welcoming Committee (Unofficial!) Marching and speaking out have become more defiant as many streets and public sites are turned over to the Games and corporate sponsors with restrictions on free speech, protest, and assembly. Come join us as we do our part to reclaim public space!
Friday, February 12th 2:30pm
Vancouver Art Gallery (750 Hornby Street).

During the Games we have a standing engagement with the Place de la Francophonie on Granville Island. A celebration of French culture from here at home and overseas. Check our website for a full list of events. We will also be performing for Winteruption, also on Granville Island.

Finally,

The Year of the Tiger is upon us, so don your favourite Hobbes costume and take in the Chinese New Years Parade on Feb. 14th at 9:00am. For route information, please go here.

A Private Function

the ‘other’ motley crew

Marc was asked to put together a small group for a private party on Granville Island.

Marc on electronic bugle
The band was contracted to play a 30 minute set on Tuesday evening at the Granville Island Brewery for the Panasonic Sound Engineers. These guys (and they were mostly, if not all, guys) seemed to be from all over the globe.

Tim and Christine

As per usual, and by request, the gig went a little long.
